How to Handle Audition Nerves: A Practical Guide for Actors

Auditions...just the word can send shivers down an actor's spine. Nerves are a natural part of the audition process, but they don't have to sabotage your performance. Here's how to keep those butterflies fluttering in formation:

how to handle audition nerves as an actor

Preparation is Key:

  • Know Your Lines: This seems obvious, but truly mastering your lines frees up mental space to focus on character and delivery, not just remembering words.

  • Research the Project: Understanding the tone and style of the production helps you make appropriate choices in your audition in advance.

  • Practice, Practice, Practice: Rehearse in front of a mirror, friends, or camera. The more you perform the material, the more comfortable you'll become.

Mind Over Matter:

  • Reframe Your Thinking: Instead of viewing nerves as a negative, see them as excitement and energy. It means you care! The more we push against our natural emotions, the more they can get the better of us!

  • Visualise Success: Imagine yourself giving a confident and compelling audition prior to arriving. This can help to boost your self-assurance. Visualisation is a technique many elite athletes use, and for good reason!

  • Breathe: Deep, calming breaths can help regulate your heart rate and ease anxiety. Try inhaling for four counts, holding for four, and exhaling for four. This will help to down-regulate your central nervous system and also keep your mind focused on something other than your nerves too.

In the Moment:

  • Arrive Early: This gives you time to settle in and avoid rushing, which can exacerbate nerves.

  • Focus on the Work: Concentrate on the scene and your character. Don't get caught up in worrying about what the casting directors are thinking, or what anyone else is doing!

Remember:

  • Everyone Gets Nervous: Even seasoned actors experience pre-audition jitters.

  • You Are Enough: Trust in your talent and preparation.

  • It's Just One Audition: There will be others. Learn from each experience and keep moving forward.

By implementing some of these strategies, you'll find auditions soon feel less daunting. The fact of the matter is that the more you do, the better you get and feel. Enjoy the process and keep auditioning!
